Cinderfall

A town of black stone and salt wind, waiting under a moon that remembers everything.

Location

Cinderfall is cut into the western face of a basalt headland where the Greysound meets the open ocean, its terraces and tunnels following old lava tubes down toward a shingle beach of glassy black pebbles. Three freshwater streams seep from the bluff and have been channeled into stepped cisterns that double as bathing pools. The land above the cliffs is treeless tundra, scoured by a wind the founders named the Long Sigh.

History

The founders made landfall here in the second autumn after planetfall, choosing the bluffs because the volcanic glass could be knapped into tools while the printers were still being calibrated. Forty-one of the original two hundred died in the first winter — most from a respiratory bloom the medics called the grey cough, a few from a tunnel collapse that is still walled off and unspoken of. The second generation grew up hauling kelp, patching seals, and learning the names of stones before the names of stars. Now, with the hydroponic terraces stable and the foundry running, the colony has begun preparing the wormhole beacon that will summon the next wave.

Current State

Mornings smell of woodsmoke from the kelp-drying racks, iodine off the tideline, and the faint ozone tang that drifts down from the foundry vents. Children run barefoot on warm basalt while their parents argue quotas in the commons; at night the ship overhead throws a second, paler shadow across every doorway. Everyone is tired in the specific way of people who chose their work and still resent it some days.
