Theme: inheritance — Status: simmering
For two years Jorin Berenger has been teaching the founders' cipher to his eleven-year-olds as a rainy-afternoon puzzle, half because he believes the children deserve their own history and half because he is tired of Mira Osanyé deciding what that history is. Ines Vogt has noticed that the puzzles match the fragments Tev shares at the kelp racks and has begun bringing him questions he cannot answer without admitting what he knows. When Mira finds a child's worksheet folded into a ration book at the commons, she will have to choose between confronting Jorin in public — which would force Asha Pradhan into the fight — or going to him quietly, which would require her to ask her daughter for help. The decision is already eating her, and she has stopped sleeping through the night.
