Schoolteacher, ages six through twelve — first generation, age 49
Warm, distractible, and stubborn about small things in a way that makes him hard to argue with. He sings while he cooks and cannot carry a tune, which his students have made into a long-running joke he pretends not to know about.
He trained as a botanist on the ship and was reassigned to teaching the year his daughter was born, because the previous teacher refused to come back from the terraces. He keeps a private greenhouse of decorative plants that produce nothing edible, and the council has decided to ignore it.
He has been teaching the children the founders' cipher as a "puzzle game" for two years, and Mira Osanyé does not yet know.
