the cost of holding things together — simmering

The Weight of the Cook Shelf

Theme: the cost of holding things together — Status: simmering

Summary

Halfdan Mosk's notebook shows the tunnel running beneath the Long Ledge cook shelf is failing faster than the storm season allows — he has known for six weeks and has not said anything, because saying it requires a repair Kolhavn does not currently have the materials or labor to complete. When he finally brings it to Maren Hoek, she will have to pull bodies from somewhere, and the only somewhere available is Lena Jonk's already-reduced classroom hours. Turid Aas, watching Maren's color and the set of her jaw at the cook shelf, is calculating what a major physical effort would cost a woman whose sternum wakes her at night, and whether she has the standing to say so before Maren has already committed. Daan Rouke's draft charter, with its clause on authority and decision-making, sits in a drawer while the decision about who decides gets made the usual way — by Maren, alone, in the cold.
