Britta Fenn

Student and self-appointed tide observer — second generation, age 7

Personality

She is quiet in a way that is not shyness but patience — she is comfortable waiting for things to become clear, which makes her an unusual match for Siv and yet they work. She speaks in complete sentences or not at all. She has a precise, unsentimental attention to the physical world that some adults find slightly unnerving, and she is kind in a way that is entirely without performance.

Backstory

She was born in the settlement's seventh year to two founding adults who are, by most measures, deeply ordinary — both alive, both functional, which makes her the only child in the cluster who does not carry some early-years loss. She has spent her conscious life on the tidal shelf and the Long Ledge and has catalogued without being told to the behavioral patterns of three bird species, the precise timing of northwest swells, and a carved mark on the underside of a basalt overhang near the Notch that does not look recent and does not match any tool Kolhavn uses.

Relationships

Story Hook

She has told no one about the carved mark under the basalt overhang because no one has asked; she is still deciding whether it was made by a person.
